   Elliot L. Richardson, Secretary of
Defense, was uannti msly selected as
the keynoter for the Svmposium which
will have as its theme, The Presidency
of the 1970's.

           Elliot L. Richardson
  Secretary Richardson had keynoted
the first of these symposia in 1970 while
serving as Secretary of Health, Edu-
cation, and Welfare. He had previous-
ly served as Under Secretary of State
from January 24, 1969 until being
named on June 24, 1970 to lead H EW.
The Senate confirmed his appointment
as Secretary of Defense January 29,
1973, and he assumed that office the
following day.
A native of Boston, Secretary Rich-
ardson is a curn laude graduate both of

Il1;tmat d College and Harsard Law
School. As i 23 year old lieutenant he
had landed in Normandy on D-Day,
Jtune 6, 19-lI For heroic service he had
received the Broze Star Medal and
the Purple Heart with Oak Leaf
Cluster.
  Under President Eisenhower he had
served as Assistant Secretary and then
at age 37 as Acting Secretary of HE EV.
Subsequently he had served as Lieu-
tenamt Governor and as Attorney Gen-
eral of Nlassachusetts. In the Bay State
he had attracted national attention
hoth for coordinating human resources
programs and for establishing the Na-
tion's first State-level organized crime
-C tion.
  In commenting on Secretary Rich-
  iclson's selection, Center President, R.
:m-don Hoxie, observed that but few
any other persons in public life have
  ccupied more responsible positions of
xecutive leadership on both the state
id national levels during the past
fi tel In sears. Moreover, we are grati-

fied by the constant encouragement
which Secretary Richardson has given
to the programs of this Center. Secre-
tary Richardson's acceptance was at the
time he took office necessarily condi-
tioned by a review of his schedule as
Defense Secretary.
  Another participant of cabinet rank
in the Second Nixon Administration
is Counsellor to the President, Mrs.
Anne Armstrong, member of the Board
of the Center. (See story on Mrs. Arm-
strong featured in this issue of the
Center House Bulletin.) As the Bulle-
tin went to press she had accepted the
invitation of the co-chairmen to par-
ticipate, subject to a review of the
schedule of her new duties.
  Following the keynote, Friday even-
ing, March 30th, the Symposium will
be organized into discussion groups
and round tables (see program sched-
ule).
