I, No. 1 CENTER SCHEDULES ROUND TABLE SERIES The White House and Foreign Policy will be the subject of the first of the 1971 distinguished evening round table series. Robert B. Semple, Jr., White House Correspondent, New York Times, will serve as moderator at the meeting, to be held on March 10th at Center House. Participants in the round table are Brigadier General Robert N. Gins- burgh, Commander, Aerospace Studies Institute, Air University; Helmut Son- nenfeldt, Senior Staff Member, Na- tional Security Council; Dr. Herbert J. Spiro, Planning and Co-ordination Staff, Department of State; and two former Deputy Assistant Secretaries of Defense for International Security Af- fairs: Richard A. Ware, who held the post under President Nixon, and Adam Yarmolinsky, who served under Presidents Kennedy and Johnson. Mr. Yarmolinsky is the author of the new volume, The Military Establishment. Mr. Ware is President, the Earhart Foundation. After each participant has made a statement, a question period will fol- low. The evening will conclude with an informal reception. The second meeting in the series, which will study The White House and Domestic Policy, is scheduled for Thursday, April 15th. The third and final session in the series will be held on May 20th when Reorganizaton of the Cabinet De- partments will be considered. CENTER LAUNCHES FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM Six fellowships were awarded by the Center to outstanding graduate and undergraduate students under the Center's fellowship program for work during the summer of 1970. COURNAND Honorary Chairman NATIONAL LEADERSHIP SYMPOSIUM PLANNED Plans are now taking shape for the second annual National Leadership Symposium on the Presidency, spon- sored by the Center for the Study of the Presidency. One hundred busi- ness, professional, educational, and labor leaders from all parts of the United States are expected to attend the Symposium, which will be held at Gurney's Inn, Montauk, from April 23rd through April 25th. The Conference theme, The White House in the 1970's is based on President Nixon's State of the Union Address. A prominent mem- ber of the Administration will be in- vited to make the keynote address, and it is hoped that present and for- mer Senior White House staff mem- bers will participate in the four suc- cessive roundtable discussions. Early interest indicates that more guests than the optimum number of 100 will want to attend. Continued on page 3 ANNUAL REPORT -1970 The following are excerpts from 1970 Annual Report by the President of the Center for the Study of the Presidency, R. Gordon Hoxie. The year 1970 witnessed both nota- ble changes and major steps towards the fulfillment of the goals of the founders of the Library of Presiden- tial Papers. A significant educational program was launched with two highly success- ful symposia, each of three-day dura- tion, with participants from through- out the nation. During the year, plans were made for an ongoing program of lectures and roundtables; for annual symposia for business and professional leaders and for students; for a fellow- ship program in association with col- leges and universities; for a publica- tion program including books and and periodicals; for an enlarged edu- cational program with high schools and colleges; and for participation in the nation's bi-centennial in a three part program including a major col- laborative historical work, a media presentation, and a schools and col- leges program. In none of this was there abandon- ment of the original library concept. Indeed, the library made substantial progress, and in conjunction there- with an information clearing house was launched. Education Programs During 1970 the Center provided unique citizenship education pro- grams and scholarly services. For ex- ample, it sent to high school teachers throughout the nation an essay on the Presidency written by Board mem- ber, James C. Hagerty. It also assisted high school and college teachers in their research projects on the Presi- dency. Some of these inquiries, which were answered by Dr. Colegrove and Dr. Hoxie, were referred to the Cen- ter by members of Congress.
