As I begin a second 5-year affiliation with the Sage Publications family
as editor of The Prison Journal, I want to thank the members of the
advisory board who have served the journal for the last 5 years. Their direc-
tion, support, and editorial reviews have strengthened The Prison Journal. At
the same time, I wish to thank the new members of the editorial advisory
board. I look forward to working with you as we continue the work of the
journal as a focal point ... for studies, ideas and discussion of adult and
juvenile confinement, treatment interventions, and alternative sanctions.
I also want to thank The Pennsylvania Prison Society for continuing to
support and foster the work of the journal. Mr. Bill DiMascio, the executive
director of The Pennsylvania Prison Society, is a tireless leader for prison
reform. His work with the SCI Graterford Lifers Public Safety Initiative led
to the landmark Day of Deliberation at SCI-Graterford on August 9,
2004-a conference held in connection with the 14th World Conference of
Criminology and attended by over 125 criminologists and practitioners. The
focus of the conference was the work of the Lifers Public Safety Steering
Committee on Ending the Culture of Street Crime, a theory focused on
crime prevention in Pennsylvania. The Prison Journal was privileged to pub-
lish the article on this theory in the December 2004 issue that honored The
Pennsylvania Prison Society.
I especially want to acknowledge the authors and scholarly audience of
The Prison Journal. It is an ongoing privilege to receive author manuscripts.
I thank you for your patience as we work to improve our review time and
communication with you. Over the past 2 years, doctoral students Kim
Dodson, Kareem Jordan, and Paul Klenowski have volunteered to help in the
important tasks associated with moving our manuscripts forward.
Finally, I thank all the authors of this special issue on gender. These manu-
scripts went through our juried process, and the issue emerged as the num-
ber of outstanding articles on gender moved forward for publication.

                                                    Rosemary L. Gido
