Ponce and Boca IV

Our heritage time line is nearing a historic mile-
stone-the 500th anniversary of Christopher Co-
lumbus' first landings in the West Indies. The
Vikings may have reached America first, but it was
Columbus' brave venture which permanently dis-
covered and opened the new world for Europe.
On his second voyage west, Columbus was ac-
companied by Ponce de Le6n. The latter rose rap-
idly thereafter in the burgeoning Spanish empire.
In April 1513, looking for Bimini, Ponce de Le6n
sighted the Florida peninsula and landed near St.
Augustine. Legend says he was seeking a spring
whose waters had the power of restoring youth. He
found neither the spring nor Bimini, but his foot-
prints became a foundation for Spanish claims to
much of our Southeast. He named his discovery
Florida, probably because it occurred at the time
of the Easter Feast, Pascita Florida.
From St. Augustine, Ponce de Le6n turned south,
exploring Florida's coast past Key West to points
on the west side. His journey carried him past Cape
Canaveral, launch pad for this generation's voyages
into outer space, and past the east edge of the
Everglades which was to become our Palm Beach
to Miami playground. Might he and his crew have
explored Boca Raton?
We will. The Section of Public Contract Law
meets for the fourth time since 1981 at our favorite
respite, the Boca Raton Hotel and Club, for our
November's CLE program and Council meeting.
On Friday, November 13, experienced panelists will
address Current Issues in Disputes Litigation.
This will be followed on Saturday and Sunday, No-
vember 14-15, by an open meeting of the Council
inder our new Captain, Stanley Dees. The Council
will address current issues of concern to the pro-
curement bar. Your participation would be wel-
come.

Because of the conquistadores, much of the
Americas adopted the Spanish language, culture and
religion. That was the conquistadores most lasting
contribution. Far more transitory were the wealth
and power which they sent back to Spain. The man-
tle for sea power and development passed soon to
other countries.
At Boca Raton, as you listen to the waves or
search for golf balls in what once was part of the
Everglades, take a moment to think back nearly 500
years to Christopher Columbus, Ponce de Le6n and
the other conquistadores. Will their story of a glo-
rious but brief light be repeated by us in the Space
Age? Will we let the mantle of exploration and de-
velopment in space pass to others?

The historic courivard and main entrance of the
Boca Raton flotei and Club-with .watue of The
Lad' of Boca surrounded ki, palms and citrus
trees.
