PROBA IO N Vol 11 No1 March 1965

Journal of the National Association of Probation Officers

COMMENT

Ourselves
THE FIRST COMMENT in this issue of PROBATION must be about the Journal itself,
now taking its new form. We do not propose to open with a selection of letters
welcoming our new start as some publications mysteriously manage to do; we
leave the Journal to speak for itself. We hope this new form will enable us to
publish longer articles than has formerly been the case (though short ones are
;till preferred) and to give more space to discussion and to book reviews.
Material of interest only to probation officer members of the Association which
'as formerly taken up a considerable share of space in PROBATION will now
ippear in the NAPO NEWSLETTER. We hope that some of the additional space
will be used by members for articles and contributions to Probation Forum
which ought to be a centre of discussion on matters of vital interest to the
probation service at this time of such rapid change and development. Above
31 we need more articles by members, based on their own thought or experience
is probation officers, for PROBATION must be primarily the voice of probation.
A service of professional workers must do quite a lot of thinking aloud and
.his Journal should be the vehicle for such thoughts. We shall try from time
.o time to submit controversial articles for comment by other readers in advance
>f publication so that an article and comment on it may appear together; we hope
hus to provoke more discussion. The success of the Journal will depend very
argely on the service it represents and not on the Editorial Board; if the
service is silent about its developments, or keeps its problems to itself, then
