VOICEPRINT IDENTIFICATION
By Lawrence G. Kersta
Voiceprint Identification is a spectrographic method by which people
can be identified by their voices. This method may be an important aid in
helping law enforcement authorities identify criminals who use the
telephone to threaten bombings of airlines and public buildings, those who
make obscene telephone calls, telephone extortion threats, and kid-
nappers who make ransom demands. Much like fingerprints, voiceprint
identification uses the unique features in the spectrographic impressions of
people's utterances.
This article details the basic application method for the Voiceprint
Identification System and areas of application.
The voiceprint identification methodology was developed during the
author's tenure at the Bell Telephone Laboratories, Murray Hill, New
Jersey.' In two years of laboratory-controlled experiments using a
relatively small population (123 members), a correct identification score
of over 99% was achieved using the skills of trained high school girl
panelists. The experiments, conducted over a two-year period, recorded
the success scores for nine different girl panelists, during which over
50,000 identification attempts were made from a library of over 16,000
different voiceprints for the experimental 123-member populations. The
controlled population consisted of 123 male voices, judged normal, with
general American dialects, and no speech oddities which might make them
easy to identify.
