DAVID CopP is Professor of Philosophy at Bowling
Green State University. He is the author of Moral-
ity, Normativity, and Society (Oxford
University Press, 1995), and of many articles in
moral and political philosophy. This is his first
publication in Philosophy & Public Affairs. Copp
is an Associate Editor of Ethics.
ALLEN BUCHANAN  is Professor of Philosophy at the
University of Arizona. A past contributor to
Philosophy & Public Affairs, he is the author of
several books, including Ethics, Efficiency, and the
Market (Rowman   and Littlefield, 1985), and co-
author with Dan W. Brock of Deciding for Others:
The Ethics of Surrogate Decision Making, and co-
editor with Jules L. Coleman of In Harm's Way:
Essays in Honor of Joel Fineberg (Cambridge
University Press, 1990 and 1994).
