Notes on                             JEFF McMAHAN   is Associate Professor of
                                     Philosophy at the University of Illinois at
the  Contributors                    Urbana-Champaign.  He  has previously
                                     contributed to Philosophy & Public Affairs
                                     and is currently completing a book entitled
                                     Killing at the Margins of Life (Oxford).
                                     ANDREW  ALTmAN  is Associate Professor of
                                     Philosophy at The George Washington University.
                                     A past contributor to Philosophy & Public Affairs,
                                     he is the author of Critical Legal Studies: A Liberal
                                     Critique (Princeton, 1990) and Arguing about
                                     Law: An Introduction to Legal Philosophy
                                     (Wadsworth, 1996).
                                     AvisHu MARGALIT  is Professor of Philosophy at
                                     the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. His most
                                     recent book is The Decent Society (Harvard, 1996),
                                     and his current interests include the philosophy
                                     of language, the theory of rationality, social
                                     philosophy, and the philosophy of religion. This is
                                     his first appearance in Philosophy & Public Affairs
                                     GABRIEL MOTZKIN  is Senior Lecturer in History,
                                     Philosophy, and German Literature at the Hebrew
                                     University of Jerusalem. He is the author of Time
                                     and Transcendence: Secular History, the Catholic
                                     Reaction, and the Rediscovery of the Future
                                     (Kluwer, 1992), and is writing a book on memory
                                     and perception. This is his first contribution to
                                     Philosophy & Public Affairs.
