WHITMAN'S SUPREME COURT PAT-
ENT CASES COMPLETED.
TWO VOLUMES: 2,095 PAGES: PRicE, TEN DOLLARS PER VOL-
UIE, SOLD SEPAIATELY.
Patent Cases determined in the Supreme Court of the United
States, including Copyright and Trade-Mark Cases,
and a Table of all American Patent, Copyright,
and Trade-Mark Cases which have been
Cited, Affirmed, or Reversed.
By CHARLES SIDNEY WHITMAN,
Author of Patent Laws and Practice of Obtaining Letters-
Patent.
As the Supreme Court of the United States possesses appel-
late jurisdiction in all actions arising under the Patent Laws
without regard to the sum in controversy, its adjudications are
of paramount importance to those interested in this rapidly-
grc wing bran hi of our national jurisprudence.
'IV le decisions of the Supreme Court having reference to pat-
on,.% nr inventions have been systematically and consecutively

reported, from the orgatization of tlse court to the present
time, and are to be found scattered through the volumes which
are embraced it tie Reports of Dallas, Cranch, Wheaton,
Peters, Howard, Black, Wallace, and Otto.
As sonic of these voluIes aore out of print, and complete sets
are seltom to be found, (except in the 'rge libraries,) and as
ii te Condensed Reports of Curtis and others tuuch natter of
inmportane to the patent lawyer has been omitted, Mr. Whit-
ian has perforted a valubile service to the profession in
gotherin itt two volumtes cases which were hitherto only to
be fountd iistributed through eighty-six.
The first volne, of twelve hludred pages, colitains all cases
reported by Dallas, Craieh, Whseaton, and Howard, and cov-
n-rs a period extending from the first organization of the court,
in 1,789 , to the Decetnber Terrn of 1861.
'The second volsne, of about eight hndred pages, contains
the later cases reptorted by Black atd Wa llace.
In view of the great difficulty of reporting cases of infringe-
inet intelligibly iti the absence of drawigs, many cases re-
quiring pictorial illustratiot have been copiously illistIrted
with engravings of the mechanical devices involved in litiga-
tion.
The ,'olune contains, anong other nseful addenda, a Table
of all Anaerican Patent, Copyright, and Trade-Mark Cases
which have been Cited, Approved, Explained, Doubted, Disap-
proved, Overrtled, or Reversed in the Reports of the Federal
and State Courts.
It preparing this Table, the anther has supplied a want
which has long been felt, and the publishers are confident that
lits labors will be appreciated by those who re aware of the
diferulties and dotbts which arise it examining the adjudi-
cated cases relating to Pattis, and wlto tre ready to avail
themselves of all ineans witin their reach in reconciling con-
flieting decisiots and settlitg doubtful questions.
It is believed that this Table will prov e atn idspensible aux-
iltary to the Digests, as it will enable tie practitioner to ascer-
Lain at at glance. whether a decision has been Overruled, Doubt-
ed, Qualified, Explained, or Affirmed, and to trace a principle
through the books from its origin to its latest development.

COIMIISSIONER OF PATENTS.
CuiLA(O, Septesmber 6, 1878.
CHLARLES S. WrHITIIAN, Woashington, D. ('..
DEAR SInR: I am pleased to learn that you are about to pub-
lish a second volume of your Suprenm Court Cases.
I have had occasion for frequent reference to your first vol-
'tine, and have fontnd it invaltable as a ready means of exam-
tinig the decisions of tie Supretne Court in Patent Cases,
without the necessity of looking through the large number of
official reports through which they are scattered. The tables
and digest I have also found exceedingly useful and reliable.
The book is one which I always keep close at hatd for every-
day reference, aRnd I have anxiouisly awaited the appearance
of a second volume, completing the work.
Yours truly,
J. MR. TILuAcHER.
