Annual Meeting Highlights

by Elizabeth Tobbe
Reno Declares Public
Lawyers Little Lower
Than Angels:
A luncheon sponsored by the
Division honored U.S. Attorney
General Janet Reno who received a
lifetime achievement award from
the Government Lawyers Section
of The Florida Bar. In her' remarks,
the Attorney General proclaimed
government lawyers, just a little
lower than angels for pursuing
their calling.
Ironically, Reno did not originally
want to become a prosecutor. She
thought the job would entail get-
ting convictions, rather than doing
justice. However, she said that now
she realizes that a prosecutor can
do more to protect an innocent per-
son than most other people. She
recalled an incident when she was
approached by a woman who was
grateful to her for fighting for her
child support payments. The
woman thanked Reno and said, I
wanted you to meet the two boys
whose lives you changed. The
Attorney General also remembered
a man who thanked her for arrest-
ing and convicting him on drug
charges. The man initially lost his
family and his job due to his dtug
addiction but added that the con-
viction enabled him to begin a new
and better life. These real life sto-
ries illustrated why Janet Reno

believes so strongly in government
work and in the duty of government
lawyers to pursue their calling.
The Division's Presidential
Showcase Program:
Jim Dator, immediate past president
of the World Future Studies Federation
and a Professor of Futures Studies at
the University of Hawaii, presented his
vision of the future as the backdrop for
the Division's Presidential Showcase
Program entitled, America: What the
Republic Will Look Like in the
Twenty-First Century. Dator stressed
that one cannot foresee the .actual.
future but one can postulate alterna-
tive futures. Drawing upon his years
in the Pacific, Dator talked about the
tsunamis of change - the tidal waves
that will alter life in the next century.
He anticipates five such tsunamis:
demographics; the environment, the
economy, government, and technolo-
gy. Following his fascinating presen-
tation a panel discussion was led by
Moderator Charles J. Ogletree Jr.,
Harvard Law School; Nan Aron,
Executive Director, the Alliance for
Justice; Pamela Fanning Carter,
Attorney General of Indiana; Dean
Emeritus John Jay Douglas of the
National College of District Attorneys;
and, William G. Paul, Chair of the
Board of Governor's Committee on
Research About the Future of the
Profession. Division Chair Judge John
R. Tunheim presided at the
Presidential Showcase.

Message to the Members:
As the Division's Chair for 1996-
1997, 1 would like to introduce
myself to you. I have been a
Federal Administrative Law Judge
in Washington, D.C. for about 20
years. I was a member of the com-
mittee which recommended that
the ABA create the Government
and Public Sector Lawyers Division
because I believe that the ABA can
benefit immensely from the partici-
pation of more public lawyers, and
that active association membership
can be a valuable and satisfying pro-
fessional experience.
My goal this year is simple and
straightforward. The Division will
work to make the ABA an exciting
and worthwhile professional associa-
tion that merits your time and
money. The emphasis will be to
provide opportunities for those who
want to participate, and to increase
membership so as to enhance our
position in the association.
There is lots to be done, and we
could do more if we had additional
volunteers with enthusiasm and
ideas. This issue of PASS IT ON
names the chairs of the Division's
committees. Contact them if you
