The first change in nine years in

Association of Grand ;urors of New
York County was voted at the an-
nual meeting on December 5 when
Lee Thompson Smith was elected
-resident to succeed Robert Apple-
'on, who had declined to be a candi-
date for re-election. Mr. Appleton,
who had held office since January
1, 1927, was elected honorary presi-
dent, a newly created office.
The Association which, under Mr.
Appleton's leadership, had become
the commanding organization of its
kind in the nation, is expected to
continue under Mr. Smith the poli-
cies and functions which have made
it great.

The Lawyers' Legislative Commit-
tee of thc Association of Grand
Jurors of New York Count,, now
well into its second sear. has con-
tinued and expanded its wxork of
considering and embodying i n t o
concrete form various proposals of
the Association for strengthening
the criminal law of New York State.
The Committee has met weekly to
consider reports and to draft legis-
lation submitted by individual mem-
bers and sub-committees. At these
meetings the proposals are prepared
and approved in final form for
introduction in the Legislature. The
eight active young lawyers compris-
ing this committee have exhibited
the greatest unselfishness and devo-
tion in the work they have under-
taken.
With the help of officers of the
Association, the Committee has
extended its friendly contacts with
legal and legislative bodies and with
other groups throughout the state
having kindred, a n d sometimes
opposing, interests. The work has
created helpful relationships with
many public officials and legislators,
through correspondence and through
personal contact. The memoranda
of the Committee, written in sup-
port of its proposals, have been
widely circulated.
