West Coast Office Opens, Web Page Revived

    Fresh Beginnings at NOVA

Springtime at the Headquarters of the
National Organization for Victim Assistance
is always a time oftrenewal-especially with
the advent of National Victim Rights Week
in April But the Spring of 2001 has been a
veritable Renaissance of organizational
change.
It began in anuary when Marlene
Young and John Stein IEWutive and
Deputyirector respectily - opened up
NOVA's West Coast office in Newberg,
Oregon. Pauneis in thei work at NOVA
since 1981 (andmarital partner since 1985),
Marlene ani Jlohn had long planned to
resettle in Oregon's Wliametle V alley, to
which Marlene hadllong returned every sti
weeks or so to visit with fmily. With the
development of telecommunications tech-
nology. the NOVWA Board gase its bless
ings to the bi-coastal plan.
    Thehangewasnot particularly abrupt,
Ine for yea s Marlene has spent much of
her time on the road, training ann other

    NOVA's new phone system, allows
leaving voic messages (harly an innova-
tion) as wel as a one-button way to be
patched toa nstaff member working at home.
    As if1to underscore NO)VA's fredomn
from geographical restr aint, the orgpaniva

reference to his mother.
Barbara (Kendall, not Bush) was a vic-
tim services pioneer in C'olorado, and be-
came an especially knowledgeable trainer
of colleagues. It is largely as a trainer that
Barbara wi contributeto meeting NOVA's
assignments -although she's also a con-
tributor to this and future Newsletters (join-
ing those anonymous staffers who get no
byline).
    Coipleting the Spring renewal,
NOVA's Web page has been completely
redesigned, and with it, a tripling of the
information visitors can obtain from the site
-along with a search engine to help navi-
gate the site.
    Marlene Young added the following:
The changes we have been through
have had their inevitable bumps -starting
with a flight to Oregon that arrived at 3 a.m.
New Year's Day, many, many hours late.
But NOV A Headquarters and NOV A West
are settled in and humming now - and more
positive changes are in the works, includ-
ing, but not limited to progress on creden-
tialing Crisis Responders and victim advo-
cates.
