VOL. IX. OCTOBER, i9o9. No. 1.

CE more October is upon us, and
we find ourselves making ready
for another Session. The Session
that has just come to an end was
not, of course, as memorable as
its predecessor. We cannot centelebrate
every year. Yet we are glad to note that there
was nothing in the nature of a relapse about
the Session 19o8-19o9. Although the average
attendance was slightly lower, the average
number of speakers showed a slight increase,
and this latter feature is one which we heartily
welcome. We have still too many members
who are content to listen to the wisdom poured
forth from the lips of others ; nervousness,
no doubt, is often the real cause; but even
the youngest among us should bear in mind
that the terrors of a maiden effort are much
worse in contemplation than they are in reality,
and our members always encourage a new
debater.
One regrettable feature connected with the
Society must, we feel, be noted. It is this,
the slackness in the payment of subscriptions.
At the time of writing we happen to know
that there are a great many members who
have not yet paid their subscriptions for the
Session 19o8-19o9. Surely this ought not to
be. We are in close proximity to the date
when subscriptions for the Session 19o9-191o
will be legally due. Is it too much to ask
that a subscription which falls due on October

Ist should be paid before the following Ist
January? We venture to think not; and,
lest there should be any misapprehension on
the point, let us hasten to say that we our-
selves are not persons of great wealth; we
have no unearned increment, nor have we
any dread of the super-tax. But we can
generally scrape together sufficient to pay
what, after all, is a very small dole in return
for the benefits we derive from our membership.
Perhaps the Committee are not strict enough
in the exercise of their powers under Rule ii.
Be that as it may, however, it is no excuse
for the attitude of those who only pay when
the Session for which their subscription is
due is fast fading away, and when our Hon.
Treasurer has worn out much of his shoe-
leather and the whole of his patience, and also
used up copious stores of notepaper in fruitless
efforts to collect the sinews of war. We are
proud of the fact that our Society is the possessor
of Consols ; other societies contemplate the
fact with amazement. But the fact that we
hold Consols does not necessarily mean that
our Hon. Treasurer has an inexhaustible bank
balance. Expenses have to be met, and he
must have the funds wherewith to meet them.
In view of what we have said as to sub-
scriptions, we fear we may be accused of
e nagging if we comment on the fact that
at the time of writing there are a number of
members who have not yet paid for their
tickets for the Dance held in December, 19o8.
We are content to merely state the fact.
Comment, surely, is unnecessary.
