LAW STUDENTS' CHRONICLE.
VOL. IV. OCTOBER, 1904. No. 1.

EDITORIAL.
WNrr the issue of this number we comnmence the
97th Session of the Manchester Law Students' Society.
It is our hope that it may be a, successful one for
the Society by having a large increase in our member-
ship, and a like increase in the number of gentlemen
who attend and speak at the ordinary meetings of
the Society. The connection with a Law Students'
Society and the taking part in the debate.s is of
inestimable value to an Articled Clerk. He gets
it to the way of'looking up points of law, and of
applying the law to t.he facts, and thus obtains a
uneful training for his after professional life.
Again, we would ask those honorary members who
have Articled Clerks to try and influence them to
become members of our Society, and to* attend our
debates.
In looking back on the last Session we cannot
honestly say the quality of the speaking, taken
as a whole, was as good as the immediate pre-
ceding Sessions. The average attendance at the
ordinary meetings was not so good as it ought to
have beeil, though better than the preceding session.
The Annual Dinner last year, being held in the-
new Midland Hotel, under the .presidency of the
Lord Mayor of Manchester, was, from a social point
of view, a magnificent success, and was perhaps the
best the Society ever held. The thanks of the
members are due to the two retiring Secretaries for
their energetic labours in connection with that event.
With regard to the Mock Trial we will refer our
readers to the anonymous criticism which appears
in this number, and they will find some very good
suggestions in what is there written.
At the beginning of last Session we were pleased

to hear of a proposal that a number of Articled Clerks,
members of out Society, should go down on Monday
evenings to the Poor Man's Lawyers' Department of
the Ancoats University Settlement, and by taking
notes and writing letters render assistance to those
Solicitors who attend there and give advice to the
pcor. A large number of Articled Clerks volunteered
to attend, and for a few weeks their attendance was
regular, but apparently the novelty soon wore off,
and with one or two exceptions the ordinary members
volunteering to assist have not kept their promises.
We hope there will be better attendances in the
future,
Now a few words with regard to this publication.
Since its first issue three years ago we think it has
been a success. A continuance of its success will
be assured if members will exercise their literary
talents and send articles for publication. The Editor,
in his corresponding number of last year, said the
literary prowess of the Society had not then been
fully shown. He has that same complaint to make
to-day. There are several gentlemen who, busy as
they are, have willingly at our request written us
excellent articles, essays, and critiques; but the
members should remember there is a limit to people's
generosity, and no doubt these gentlemen think-
and quite rightly think-that the labour ought to
be distributed more evenly all round. Will the
members kindly consider the preceding lines seriously,
and act accordingly?
The Committee's Report for the Session 1903-1902_
is printed this month, and the attention of the
members is directed to it. From the balance sheet
it appears we have a slightly less balance than last
year. Cannot a little less be spent on the Mock
Trial? £25 19s. 2d. seems too much.
