VOL. XI. OCTOBER, 1911. No. 1.

IT is with a heavy heart that we take up the
Editorial pen for the last time. The Editorship
[of this Magazine has, and wisely so, generally
been kept anonymous, but we feel that for once
the veil ought to be lifted. We refer to the
death on the 6th of April last of Mr. Norman
Elliott, who was the joint Editor of the Chronicle,
and we, his colleague, cannot pass on without
paying our humble tribute to his sterling
qualities: unfailing courtesy and amiability,
indomitable perseverance and energy, and
marked intellectual power.
Never was an association more harmonious,
never a relationship more cordial; and to our
share in the general loss at the Society being
deprived of a very promising member at so
early an age is added a real personal loss. He
worked indefatigably in promoting the welfare
of the Chronicle, contributing several brilliant
articles to its pages, in addition to doing the
lion's share of the general routine work.
Our deepest sympathy is extended to his
family, and particularly to his father, who is an
honorary member of our Society, for we know
how proud he was of his son, and how much
he had looked forward to his son joining him
in practice.
The funeral took place at Bowdon, and the
Society was represented there by three delegates.
The Society also sent a wreath.

Just as we are going to press we hear of another
great loss the Society has sustained in the death
of Mr. A. Somers. To no man is the Society
under a deeper debt of gratitude than to Mr.
Somers for labours of love performed in the
Society's interests. His wit was proverbial;
his kindliness and sympathy a byword; his
example will long inspire us.
Another Session is now upon us, and we must
appeal to our readers to use their most strenuous
endeavours to make it'a success.
Particularly do we feel this appeal to be neces-
sary as we think we see certain signs of apathy
and indifference amongst the members of the
Society. Last Session was not all it might have
been ; there was a loss, as usual, on the Dinner,
but what is most noticeable is that there was
an adverse balance on the Dance, which has
hitherto been a uniform success. We have
always laid stress in these columns on the im-
portance of social functions, but the members
have not even the excuse that they have con-
centrated their efforts on the serious side of
the Society's life, for not one single Law Not-s
Debating Prize was won during the whole
Session. Really the Society must waken up-
Verbum sab.
Before making our final bow, we should like
sincerely to thank our contributors for their
generous support in filling the pages of the
Chronicle, and our readers for the kind
indulgence we have invariably received at their
hands.
