LAW STUDENTS' CHRONICLE.

OCTOBER, 1901.

No. 1.

EDITORIAL.
TIHE motives which prompted the Manchester Law
_ Students' Society to emulate the literary
prowess of a Sister.Society were probably of a mixed
character. The primary motive, doubtless, was the
very proper desire not to be outdone by our contem-
poraries in the West; but when this desire took shape,
it was found that a Magazine could be so worked in
a compendious form as to combine the usual notices
of meetings and chronicles of the Society's doings
with an opportunity for its members to slip from their
shoulders the cloak of literary reserve and tentatively
put forth a toe into the sea of letters.
Our design, therefore, is in six issues, coincident
with the progress of the session, to announce our
fixtures for the month to come and our achievements
in the month past, and to draw upon the fund of
humour and legal learning which must be standing
in our midst to the credit, it is to be hoped, of the
Society.
This month we print, inter alia, the body of our
Committee's report, some comments on our latest
forensic achievement, with reference to which it will
be noticed that the epithets describing the audience
are no longer printed in capital letters, together with
a tisquisition on the saying Who finds, keeps, from
the pen of an official of our strictly local Court;
while a voice from the Bench of the County Court
instructs us in complete advocacy.
We wish ourselves well in this new venture, and
appeal to the practical literary sympathy of our
members, whether the same takes the form of essays
or contributions to the inevitable Correspondence
Column.

( ENTILEMEN-
Your Committee have pleasure in presenting to
you their 93rd Annual Report, being for the Session
1900-1. In their opinion the Session has been
markedly successful. Nineteen new ordinary
members have been elected, but no honorary
members have been elected. Five honorary and four
ordinary members have resigned, and two honorary
members have died. The considerable accession of
ordinary members is a matter for great satisfaction.
The total number of members is now 230.
During the Session 15 meetings have been held,
including the annual general meeting, one joint
debate, the annual dinner, a- smoking concert, the
mock trial, and ten ordinary meetings.
Delegates also attended a joint debate with the
Liverpool Law Students' Association, when an
interesting debate was followed by the most hospit-
able entertainment of your representatives at the
annual dinner of the home association. The cordial
welcome which was extended to your delegates was
much appreciated by them.
The joint debate at home was held on December
11 th, 1900, with the Sheffield Law Students' Society,
under the presidency of Mr. Edgar, and was followed
by the Society's A.nnual Dinner at the Albion Hotel,
Piccadilly. Mr. Edgar again presided, supported by
Messrs. Hockin, Somers, and Gilnore, vice-presidents.
The dinner, at which the Sheffield delegates were the
Society's guests, was followed by a short smoking
concert, the whole forming an excellent evening's
entertainment.
