Changing Times and People

There is a much-cited old Chinese curse: May you
live in interesting times. These days we do here in
Britain, what with uncertain house prices, the
banking crisis, recession, rising unemployment,
massive public debt and a general election round
the comer. Also interesting, but in a positive way,
perhaps of more concern to our Journal subscribers
and Members of the Society than the public at
large, is the fact that we have now successfully com-
pleted a whole year (plus one late issue) of publish-
ing the Journal with the Royal Society of Medicine
Press (RSM Press). RSM Press gallantly stepped in
at very short notice and did a great job into the
bargain. This year, readers may notice some minor
improvements to the Journal's presentation (but no
prizes will be awarded for spotting them), which
have been suggested by the RSM's experienced edi-
torial and design team and gratefully approved by the
Editors.
It is at this point that I want to thank Dr Martin
Mansell for all his help and input for the 10 years
he spent as deputy editor and it was with great reluc-
tance that I and the Society accepted his resignation,
which was prompted by his very heavy work com-
mitments. In the next breath, I am delighted to
welcome Dr Daniel Haines who has agreed to take
over this post.
Dr Haines has by any standards enjoyed an un-
usually varied and interesting professional career,
both in Britain and around the world. He made a con-
ventional start reading Dentistry at Guy's Hospital, but
while still a student he became involved in the dental
identification of air disaster victims. Having qualified
in Dentistry he was invited by Professor Camps to
read Medicine at the London Hospital. There he
embarked on a career in forensic pathology but after
two years of corpses and body fluids for company,

he and his wife, Hilary, took off for 10 years of
general practice with the FCO in the Cayman
Islands, Swaziland and the Falkland Islands. Caught
in the Argentine invasion of the Falklands, where he
was the Senior Medical Officer, he had some
amazing medical and surgical experiences, followed
by seven weeks in an Argentine prison (see his
book, A Dangerous Practice - Falkland Islands GP
(Memoir Club, 2005)).
Since returning to London where he now lives,
Daniel divides his time between general practice
and police surgeon work, with a little forensic dentis-
try to add diversity. He is also a bee-keeper and
together with his wife Hilary he records, photographs
and reports on the butterflies of North Cyprus and
maintains the national collections.
Daniel was made a Deacon in the Anglican Church
in Swaziland and ordained Priest at Southwark
Cathedral and is honorary Assistant Chaplain at
HM Tower of London. He has served 45 years in
the Territorial Army, served in the First Gulf War
and was awarded the TD soon after return from the
Falkland Islands.
We also welcome another new recruit to the honor-
ary officers' team as Sophie Pownell will be our
acting Legal Secretary while Tania Francis (so won-
derfully efficient and a hard act to follow) is spending
six months in Australia with her husband and family.
The Society's Council, presided over by Dr Robin
Moffat, who organised an outstanding series of lectures
last year (which included two joint conferences held
with the RSM's Sections of Clinical Neurosciences
and Psychiatry on the subject of major and minor
head injury), have followed this with an excellent pro-
gramme for this year, including the annual elegant
dinner (arranged by Dr Neville Davis) due to take
place on 10 May 2010.
