                              DIAMOND JUBILEE
IT is 6o years since the Medico-Legal Society was founded, and this year's Dinner,
to be held at Lincoln's Inn on May 8, will take special cognizance of this fact. The
Society, quite simply, aims at the furtherance of medico-legal knowledge in all its
aspects. The nature of the papers and discussions indicates that the furtherance of
our knowledge is in breadth, rather than depth, and we tend to general treatment as
opposed to detailed specialist information on a subject.
In this connection the social side of the Society is important. At least as useful
as learning itself is the knowledge of where to seek it. Regular attenders at the
meetings make many useful contacts in the medico-legal world and, when required,
a friendly telephone call may often point the way to a particular expert. This
sociability might not appear strictly to further medico-legal knowledge, but it often
does so in practice. Development of personal acquaintanceship with those working
in similar fields is an important part of the Society's activity.
We reproduce a list of Past Presidents. They are elected usually for 2-year
periods, and occupants of the Chair are drawn alternately from the Law and from
Medicine. Many distinguished men and women have governed our affairs in the
past, and will continue to do so in the future. Our membership increases steadily.
We gratefully acknowledge the following kind messages which have been sent to
us:-
From the Lord Chancellor, Viscount Kilmuir, to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee year
      of the Medico-Legal Society.
I am very pleased to have this opportunity of congratulating the Medico-Legal
Society on its Diamond Jubilee and of wishing it well for the future.
To the Society I can almost say-
                        0 nata mecum Consule Manlio,
and yet 6o years in our profession is a comparatively short time. In that period the
Society has achieved a reputation second to none among the members of two profes-
sions which include the most penetrating and critical minds in the country.
Medicine and the Law have much in common. They are professions demanding
the highest degree of intellectual capacity and mental energy; their practitioners are
called upon to serve their fellows in those matters which are of the supreme importance
to every human being, and it is on their integrity and ability that so many of our
vital institutions rely.
The paths of our two professions must inevitably cross again and again. The
Medico-Legal Society has contributed much to their mutual understanding and
instruction, without which neither profession could fulfil its functions properly; it
has been able to make this contribution because it has attracted to itself so many
who have been pre-eminent among colleagues already distinguished. A Society
which has numbered among its presidents Lord Atkin and Sir Bernard Spilsbury
needs no further evidence of its standing in legal and medical circles.
The Medico-Legal Society has my very best wishes for the future.

From Sir Arthur Porrit, K.C.M.G., K.C.V.O., C.B.E., P.R.C.S., President of the
Royal College of Surgeons of England.
It is a great pleasure-and a privilege-to have the opportunity of congratulating
the Medico-Legal Society on its Diamond Jubilee. Over the 6o years the common
bonds of interest between our two professions have steadily strengthened. The
