It is not only a pleasure, but a great honor for me to commu- nicate the last results of my researches from 19o6 to the present (lay, to so illustrious an assembly as the American International Congress on Tuberculosis. since in two preceding sessions of 1904 and 19o6 it received so favorably my researches on the difference- between tuberculosis and l)hthisis of the lung. I shall mention some of the results obtainel during the last two years in the three principal stages of my work, i. e., on tuber- culosis and phthisis in the tissues and organs; on the pure culture of the phthisiogenous microbe in the drop and in vitro; on the experiments made with the pure culture in vitro on rabbits and guinea-pigs. Ii the first stayre, i. c., that of the alterations produced by the pihthisiogenous microbe in the tissues and organs, I must signalize a fourth form to the three I have already specified. I have calle.l this fourth form Phthisis-Pnicunoniformis. This morbonLs entity has a course from twelve to twenty days in individuals formerly healthy. and has been hitherto confused with Polmonitis crupale nr fibrinosa. It consists of a massy infiltration spreading grad- ually from the apex to the basis of the superior lobe of the lung (gcierallv the left one ) accompanie I by high fever, rigor, great prostraticn of strength, besides implication of the sensorium in form of a subiomatous state, it brings the individlual inexorably to the tomb.
