APPELLATE DIVISION, THIRD DEPARTMENT.
HON. ALDEN CHESTER.
Associate Justice,
i896-Still Serving.
Was born in Westford, Otsego County, New York, Sep-
tember 4, 1848, being the youngest son of the late Alden and
Susan G. (Draper) Chester. Both his father and mother
were of New England ancestry; his father's ancestor, Samuel
Chester, having come from England to Boston about the
middle of the seventeenth century, and settled in New Lon-
don, Conn., in 1663, and his mother's ancestor, James Draper,
having come from Yorkshire, England, and settled in Rox-
bury, Mass., probably in the year 1647. His grandfather,
John Chester, and his great-grandfather, Joshua Draper, on
his mother's side, were both revolutionary soldiers, the latter
being at the battle of Bunker Hill. He is also a descend-
ant of Elder William Brewster, of the Mayflower.
Judge Chester's father died when he was only about eight
years old, leaving him largely to his own resources. His
early education was received in the district school in his na-
tive place, and at the Westford Literary Institute there. Be-
fore reaching his majority he served as a clerk in a wholesale
commission house in New York, and also in a country store
