It has seemed that a review of the most notable results
of the last hundred years, in the advancement of the sci-
ence of forensic medicine, from the standpoint of those who
are now active workers, as well as those who have been
observers and students of the latter part of the closing cen-
tury, would be of interest to those who will succeed us in
our labors in the coming one.
Without question the Medico-Legal Society will be re-
garded, by the student of the next century, as one of the
most conspicuous factors in the last third of the I9th.
Founded in 1867, its legal organization was perfected on
June 2o, i868.
I do not feel called upon to speak of the work of that
Society, on this occasion. Its labors can be better detailed
and described by others.
-Its work and mission will be judged by those who suc-
ceed us, and our colleagues, and even by our detractors
and opponents.
Another most conspicuous factor in the closing years of
the century, in the progress of the science, has been the
MEDICO-LEGAL JOURNAL, founded in June, 1883, as the
organ of the Medico-Legal Society. It has completed its
i7th volume by the March number of 19oo.
The influence of this journal, upon the development and
progress of the science, must be judged by others and by
posterity. It has become a part of the literature of forensic
