EDITORIAL

Medical law is one of the most rapidly expanding fields of study in recent
times, not only in the UK but world-wide. The aim of the Journal is to
provide a forum within which to stimulate debate, examine new
developments and enhance understanding of the often contentious issues
which underlie medicine and law in the modern world.
We consider that the publication of this Journal is especially valuable in
these times of radical re-organisations of the delivery of health-care and
major developments in medical science and technology which give rise to
difficult legal and ethical problems. The increasingly international
perspective is a challenge for aspiring and established lawyers and health
care professionals. This Journal presents an opportunity to explore the
complicated relationship between law and medicine both within and across
national boundaries. We hope that this publication will prove to be both
informative and intellectually challenging.
The Journal, as it develops, will include material which describes and
analyses new developments, trends and recently decided cases, and reviews
books which are of interest to academics and practitioners in the field. It will
offer insights into problems arising under domestic jurisdictions, and
perspectives which only comparisons of different legal systems can offer.
Readers are invited to submit materials which cover a broad spectrum
of issues related to health-care, medicine, ethics and law. Shorter research
notes, case comments and book reviews are also invited, and suggestions for
special issues will be welcomed by the editors.
We hope that readers will play a part in determining the future
development of the Journal by providing constructive comments and good
quality discursive material to help us achieve our main objective of
facilitating the understanding the relationship between law and medicine
throughout the world.
