        Professor   J. Stewart   Orr DSc  FRSE,   President   of the Academy 1998-9
Educated in Glasgow, Professor Orr started as a physicist in industry on infra-red missile guidance, before
joining the NHS  as a Regional Adviser on diagnostic X-ray equipment. He then ran West of Scotland
radiotherapy physics, researching mainly in radiobiology and biological kinetics. On taking the Chair of
Medical Physics at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School, London, he was involved in developments in
magnetic resonance imaging and hospital computing. His radiation interests continued in the NRPB, the
Black Committee on Sellafield leukaemia and litigation advice. Latterly he has worked on problems of clinical
language in computing. He served his professional bodies in the UK and Europe from 1969 onwards. For
lighter moments he climbed in his youth, sailed in his age and generated nine grandchildren in between.
