Tradition, Transitions and Trends

INTRODUCTION
In 1967, contributors to a special issue of Library Trends exam-
ined the state of the art of bibliography.' Specialists were asked to
analyze the developments in their own subject areas. Miles 0.
Price, then Law Librarian Emeritus and Emeritus Professor of Law
at Columbia University, provided an article on the topic of legal
bibliography.' He noted that, while the term was often used to de-
scribe the kinds and functions of legal materials, he would use it as
applied to lists of law books and related materials. Professor Price
proceeded to offer comments on several bibliographies, and the
uses made of those tools by legal researchers. His views remain illu-
minating in today's research environment, and his remarks about
many of the titles are as true now as they were twenty years ago.
The article is particularly interesting because of one section de-
voted to a new technological development. Professor Price, a leader
of the profession, praised the advances in a process which, he be-
