Louisiana's legal history prior to statehood spans exactly a century,
1712 to 1812. Nothing else about it is neat and tidy. The colonial period
encompasses fifty years of French rule and forty-one years of Spanish
authority, culminating in a brief reversion to French ownership just in
time for the Louisiana Purchase in the spring of 1803. The United States
then governed the Louisiana Territory until statehood was enacted in
1812. Yet documenting the state's early legal history requires reaching
back centuries earlier into French and Spanish sources that still strongly
