Librarians attempt to solve a variety of problems each day in the
face of an increasingly complex workplace. The impetus for this work
was to create a sourcebook for some of the key issues librarians must
address. Questions posted to listservs often include the type of ques-
tion this compendium will answer, such as Has anyone ever dealt
with    _   ? A review of the topics covered here should indicate that
the blank can be filled with one of a dozen different possible subjects.
The issues covered in this compilation will provide librarians with a
very practical guide for coping with rapidly changing technology and
increasing demands for services.
The authors cover a range of topics dealing with the day-to-day
issues facing librarians, including: technological competencies, prob-
lem patrons and security, reference responsibilities, web resources for
teaching, reference desk instruction, library tours, electronic resources
for patrons, technology in reference, drafting enforceable rules, avoid-
