A Changing of the Guard
Within moments of being offered the editorship of LRSQ, I realized that I
would have to write an introduction to my first issue. It is a daunting task for
many reasons, not the least of which is the fact that Bob Berring is one hard
act to follow. Part Zen master, part commando legal researcher, part stand-up
comic-the energy, enthusiasm and intelligence he brings to any endeavor is
intimidating.
I respect Bob not only because of my professional interactions with him
over the last several years, but also because of my experiences as a student in
the law librarianship program at the University of Washington. Bob arrived in
the Spring of 1981, to fill the position made vacant by the retirement of
Marian Gould Gallagher. (Bob would be the first to admit that no one could
replace Marian, or Mrs. G as we called her.) In our first meeting it was
apparent that he immediately creates a presence when he enters a room,
humming on all cylinders. Whatever lingering doubts I might have had about
my career choice, Bob shattered them immediately.
Mrs. G had agreed to finish out the year teaching the four students in her
program. As an added bonus, Bob would sit in on our last two courses. Those
courses were defining moments in my professional life. Here were two pro-
fessionals who took their work, but not themselves, very seriously. Each took
turns being straight man/woman for the other. Each class had the same basic
form: a little banter, followed by some more banter, ending with some final
