EDITORIAL


   The University of California at Berkeley currently is grinding its
way through a process of discussion and debate that may produce
the next generation of library education. Librarians do not need to
be reminded that our profession is at risk. Our flagship library
schools have been closed, and in many of our organizations other
professionals are being put in charge of what have always been
library operations. In the cruelest of ironies, at the very point that
the information superhighway has stepped to the centerstage of
national consciousness, librarianship is being left behind.
  The two library schools of the University of California; one at
Berkeley, one at UCLA, have each been perched on the edge of the
abyss for some time. For a moment, each was rumored to be dead. It
now appears that each will survive. The resolution at UCLA seems
complete. The UCLA Graduate School of Library and Information
Science is merging into the School of Education. UCLA will con-
tinue to graduate students with M.L.I.S. degrees in the future.
  The situation at Berkeley is more fluid. For two academic years
the administration and faculty of Berkeley have studied the School
of Library and Information Studies. During that time no new stu-
dents have been admitted into the Masters program. As a succession
