CHIEF JUSTICE HOLT.
T HE life of Chief Justice Iolt should be one of the most
interesting to all lawyers; for it was as a lawyer alone,
as a learned and courageous lawyer, that be earned his position
and his fame, and made himself worthy of our grateful remem-
brance. Without splendid oratory, without a political career,
without taking any part in the government of his country, Holt,
by his ability, his learning, his upright mind and his intrepid
courage, stands worthily among the greatest of England's judges.
And as no man can well do higher service to his country than by
improving the laws, reforming their administration, and maintain-
ing the purity of justice, we are justified in placing Holt on a
higher pinnacle of honourable fame, remembering his twenty-two
years of labour as Chief Justice, than other judges who, though
of equal learning and integrity, wasted many years of their lives
in political strife and party faction. The career of Holt does not
contain those popular attractions and dramatic incidents which
are to be found in the lives of Coke and Mansfield; yet, for this
reason also, it is most interesting and instructive to inquire into
the causes of his greatness, and the foundations of his fame.
The time at which Holt lived and worked also makes his life
most historically valuable : it was during the reigns of James II.
and William and Mary; it was at the epoch of the revolution,
one of the most important in modern history. He saw the end
of. the old system and the beginning of the new: the crumbling
