Editorial: Continuation and Change

TheJournal of World Investment and Trade wishes you a very Happy Year 2019!
This year starts with important changes at the crest of the Journal, as I join
as additional Editor-in-Chief alongside Stephan Schill. Thanks to the support
of the Max Planck Institute Luxembourg for Procedural Law, the Journal also
comes with a strengthened team, with Derek Stemple as new Managing Editor,
and Joshua Paine and Edoardo Stoppioni as additional Associate Editors.
So much for change - but there is also continuation. As you might guess,
Stephan Schill and I have discussed at length the future of theJournal. Being in-
volved as Editor-in-Chief is not a decision to be taken lightly. Stephan has over
the past five years done an outstanding job and boosted the Journal. This is as
such a challenge, all the more as editorial constraints are enormous: deadlines
are deadlines, and authors, but also reviewers, are more and more overloaded.
The main challenge, however, is content. It is what makes a journal worth
reading in a context where it is not only competing with other journals, but
also with blogs that publish short pieces quickly. That way readers can remain

there is a fine balance to be found in order to combine the necessity of tackling
cutting-edge issues and following closely the evolution of the field and the re-
quirement to publish long-lasting articles that will continuously be referenced
through time. All the same, it is important to open the journal to new voices,
while keeping on board more experienced ones. Last but not least, the special-
ization in investment and trade calls for again another balance. Indeed these
two fields turn out to be currently subject to heavy political debates while also
requiring expert, if not highly technical, knowledge. But what is challenging is
also very exciting and stimulating.
All of this is not intended to announce big changes in the editorial approach
of the Journal, but to restate what is now ajoint project, to keep the Journal at
the forefront of the discipline. We intend to keep the pace with special issues
devoted to symposia each year. The next issue, for example, will be dedicated
to 'Chinese External Energy Security: Energy Investment and Trade Along the
Belt and Road.' We also intend to commission more articles on pressing issues,
but we want to stress that spontaneous submissions remain more than wel-
come, not least as they help identify new authors from all around the world. All
in all, we think that the current state of world affairs, which triggers numerous
