RESEARCH AND PUBLICATION ACTIVITY OF
BUSINESS LAW PROFESSORS

  Successful faculty careers in academic institutions have long been based
upon the three basic areas of performance: (1) teaching; (2) scholarly and
professional activities; and (3) service. Excellence,  or at least
demonstrated competence,  in each of the areas is generally required for
college and university professors regardless of discipline. However, there
are typically great variations between disciplines regarding the types
of activities that are properly considered in each category of performance
and the means by which the performance is evaluated. These variations
have made  it difficult to evaluate the scholarly and professional ac-
tivities of business professors generally and business law professors in
particular.
  The  scholarly and professional activities required of business law
professors are increasingly being interpreted as including some type of
publications. The increasing pressure to publish has been made even more
stressful by the lack of established criteria for (1) what constitutes
research for a business law professor and (2) where the research must
be published in order to satisfy the research requirements of an academic
institution. Since business law professors have been and will continue
to be evaluated by their peers both within and outside colleges of business
on the basis of their scholarly and professional activities, the authors
undertook an examination of the research production of and expectations
for business law professors.
  It should be noted initially that some disciplines within colleges of
business have attempted to generate rankings of journals and profes-
sional meetings in an attempt to evaluate the scholarly production of
