DEVELOPING A UNIT ON COMPUTER AND THE LAW

Doria Bonham-Yeasan. Associate Professor of Busines Law,
Florida International University, North Miami, Florida

                        INTRODUCTION

Because of the need for legal studies educators to
inform their students about legal issues that have attended
the rapid growth in the use of computers, it is important
to include a unit dealing with Computers and the Law into
the curriculum. This can supply students with pertinent
legal information concerning contracts involving computers.
provide a more detailed approach to the legal protection of
intellectual property, and give insight into the legal
developments in the law as it concerns computer abuse.

While a course in Business Law would be the most
appropriate subject in which to house a unit on Computer
and the Law, other courses in legal studies could very well
include such a unit. Because of the increase in majors in
Management Science and Systems concentrating upon computer
use in decision science, a unit on Computer and the Law
would deal specifically with issues which are important to
such career objectives.

Although the scope of this article is to assist the
professor in designing a Computer Law unit for the
traditional Business Law course, the subject matter could
be enlarged to satisfy a more expanded curriculum need.
Thus, where computer-related courses are housed in schools
other than in Colleges of Business Administration, a
Computer Legal Problems course could be offered by the
Department of Legal Studies within the College of Business
Administration as a service course to enhance these
studies. Thus, Computer Science majors within Math
Departments in Colleges of Arts and Sciences. Computer
Education majors planning to teach computer literacy in
elementary and secondary programs, and students studying
the more technical aspects of computers within the colleges
of Engineering, as well as the Management Science and
Systems majors within the College of Business
