OF BUSINESS

Faculty evaluation decisions are among the most important, yet
difficult, processes in colleges and universities. Information concerning
the factors that impact these decisions is important to all faculty
members. Recently, Daughtrey and Gibbes reported the emphasis that
thirty college of business deans place on various research, teaching,
and service activities of business law faculty.' Our paper reports the
results of a survey of all American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of
Business (AACSB) department heads who evaluate business law faculty
performance.2 The survey addresses the relative value of various
scholarly activities in tenure, promotion to associate professor, and
promotion to full professor decisions as well as the importance of
research relative to teaching and service in these decisions.
Our results indicate that scholarship plays a primary role in the
performance evaluation of business law faculty. The scholarly accom-
plishments most valued by department heads of business law faculty
are those related to publications, external recognition, and funding.
