VOLUME I 2009
FOREWORD
The Journal of Indian Law and Society (formerly 'The Juridical Review')
published by the Student Juridical Association of the West Bengal National
University of Juridical Sciences, Kolkata is entirely run and edited by students and
the editorial board is proud to present the first edition of this Journal.
We, the members of the editorial board, have from its initiation seen the
Journal of Indian Law and Society as a 'vehicle for change.' It is our objective to
publish articles that inspire thought, challenge the unquestioned norm and demand
a change in legal thought that requires such scrutiny. As we ourselves have gone
through an overhaul this past year, it is now the Journal's policy to publish articles
of relevance to Indian law that have a direct nexus with contemporary issues of
economic, political, legal and social significance.
Every preceding Editorial Board has been committed to achieving a higher
literary standard with each edition. In the previous editions, the journal has been
honoured with mentionby the Honourable Speaker of the Lok Sabha (2004-09) Shri
Somnath Chatterjee and has been the first student run Indian journal to find a place
in the library of the International Court of Justice.
WE now endeavour to fulfil our obligation to the editorial boards before
us by not only upholding the lofty standards of the Journal but with this change,
to allow room for further progress and to indeed make the Journal of Indian Law
and Society a name to be reckoned with.
We would be failing in our duty if we did not express our most heartfelt
gratitude to the Advisory Editorial Board for their guidance and support through
the editorial process, Professor M.P. Singh, Vice Chancellor of the W.B. National
University of Juridical Sciences for his patronage and the Journal's faculty advisor
Ms. Jasmine Joseph for her invaluable assistance from the very inception of the
journal to the formation of the editorial board. We would also like to express our
gratitude to Mr. Pedro Rubim Borges Fortes for his contribution. Finally, to our
readers, we sincerely thank you for your continued presence through the last six
years of the journal's existence. We are truly indebted for the interest and support
we have been shown.
