Introduction
Criminologists often aim to influence public policy or professional practice across
criminal justice and related sectors. They not only produce knowledge that can be
useful in reducing crime and ensuring that justice is both effective and fair, but many
also have a clear desire that their work should help achieve those aims (Blomberg,
2019). To this end, the codes of ethics of both the Academy of Criminal Justice
Sciences (2000) and the American Society of Criminology (2016) require their members
to be committed to free and open access to knowledge, to public discourse on
findings, and to sharing sources of those findings whenever possible. Similarly, the
British Society of Criminology (2015) statement of ethics requires members to
