This is the first issue put together in its entirety by the new editorial team, and
we take the opportunity to give readers and contributors an idea of our inten-
tions for the Journal. Our first task, however, must be to thank the outgoing
editors, lain Begg and John Peterson. They handed over an enterprise in rude
health and recognized as the leading interdisciplinary journal in the European
field. Such a pleasing result represents much hard and careful work by them
to encourage and sustain a very high quality of submissions and publications,
as well as a community of referees without whom no journal can function.
They have done a terrific job and the new editorial team is pleased and proud
to be picked to follow them.
Our philosophy for the journal is twofold. On the one hand, we are firm
believers in the commonsense dictum that 'if it ain't broke don't fix it'. As
already noted, the journal remains the leader in the field of European integra-
tion studies broadly defined, a position that has been reached both because of
the quality of authors' contributions to it and also because of the preference of
our readers for a multi-disciplinary, pluralistic approach to the study of the
integration process. At JCMS there has never been an intellectual or theoreti-
cal orthodoxy and the only gate-keeping function that has taken place has
been one that insists on the highest standards of scholarly enquiry from any
and all relevant disciplinary - and multidisciplinary - approaches. This phi-
losophy will remain under our editorship. Therefore, as a contributor or reader
you can expect a high level of continuity, including the retention where possi-
ble of existing members of the Editorial Board, Editorial Advisory Board and
