T he articles included in this special issue are revised versions of papers presented
at a workshop on desistance held in Washington, DC, on May 3-4, 2006. This
workshop was funded by the National Consortium on Violence Research (NCOVR).
We are extremely grateful to Alfred Blumstein, director of NCOVR, for his support
in this venture, and to Pat Edgar and Carol Miller for their administrative assistance.
We are also indebted to Chris Eskridge for his assistance in publishing these articles
in this journal.
The workshop was organized by the coeditors of this special issue and attended
by the authors of the articles, as well as by Alfred Blumstein, Shawn D. Bushway,
Patrick M. Clark, Julie Horney, Megan C. Kurlychek, Akiva Liberman, Paul
Nieuwbeerta, Lee Ann Slocum and Gary Sweeten. The discussions in the workshop
were extremely stimulating, and the participants' comments and suggestions have
greatly enhanced the quality of the papers.
We hope that this special issue will convince readers of the crucial importance of
the topic of desistance in criminology, from both theoretical and policy viewpoints,
and of the need to develop this area of research further in order to address essential
questions about this key dimension of the criminal career.
