Recent Developments in Insurance Law in Maryland, Vir-
ginia and the District of Columbia
Joseph F. Cunningham 7
Mr. Cunningham observes that much substantive insurance
law has been made of late by the appellate courts in Mary-
land, Virginia and the District of Columbia. He selects
several noteworthy cases to illustrate his contention that the
truly remarkable ferment of intellectual and decisional ac-
tivity in the higher courts in these jurisdictions gives
promise of ultimate judicial preeminence of one or more of
these courts.
Punitive Damages: An Insurer's View Roy E. Pomerantz 21
In reviewing the New York experience, Mr. Pomerantz ad-
dresses the concern of insurers with regard to punitive
damages and their insurability. Examining the imposition
of punitive damages generally and in actions against in-
surers for bad faith, Mr. Pomerantz provides pragmatic
insight for the handling of such suits.
