Section of International Law and Practice
Background Papers
from the Santa Fe
Leadership Retreat
The Section held its bi-annual Leadership
Retreat in Santa Fe, New Mexico, on October
26-29, 2000. The retreat focused on strategic
issues concerning the future direction of the
Section and on day-to-day operational ques-
tions of interest to those involved in leading
committees or other Section activities. In
preparation for the retreat, several leaders were
asked to prepare background papers on some
of the topics to be discussed, ranging from Sec-
tion membership and finances to the Section's
role in the ABA and the impact of technology
on the future of the Section. In order to share
this invaluable information with members who
were unable to attend the retreat, the ILN Edi-
torial Board has decided to publish these excel-
lent background papers.

Current Status of Section
The Section is currently fairly effective in the use of technology
We have one of the most sophisticated websites on the ABA
webpage. Virtually every committee has a listserv and most are
using them. Some committees are actively using a Webboard;
and Webboards have been set up for all the other committees,
as well. Use of e-mail has largely replaced fax and letters in
everyday communication.
This has been paralleled with developments at the staff level.
We now have a much more sophisticated computer setup than
we did a year or so ago. ABA programs such as TIMSS have
made meeting organization and accounting more automated
and timely. Finally we have better membership data through
Brio, although that is a project which is far from complete.
