Helmut Althoff Institut fur Gerichtliche Medizin der Universitat Koln (BRD) Eingegangen am 23. Januar 1974 For Which Problems Can One Expect Reliable Pathomorphological Findings after Exhumation ? Summary. Autopsies after exhumation are done for the following reasons: 1. late suspition of a crime, 2. if cause and manner of death has not been explained sufficiantly after death, e.g. after traffic accidents or accidents during work, 3. if the identity of the dead is uncertain. The principals concerned often are interested as to what findings can be expected from an exhumation, taking into consideration a special problem and a specific length of burial time. Our own postmortem results of 36 exhumations with a burial period between 6 days and 17 years demonstrate that anatomical structures and pathological alterations in organs can be detected for a long time after inhumation. In 32 of 36 cases we were able to clear up sub- sequently the problems of criminal procedure or insurance matters or workmen's compensation. We put our own results together with those of other examiners in a so called expectation catalogue. The various conditions found long after burial justify optimism for success from an exhumation. It certainly should be given a try. Zusammenfassung. Untersuchungsergebnisse von 36 Exhumierungsfallen werden demon- striert. Zusammen mit vergleichbaren Befunden anderer Untersucher entstand ein ,,Erwar- tungskatalog, in dem faBbare anatomische Gegebenheiten und pathologische Organverande- rungen der Dauer der Leichenzeit gegenibergestellt wurden. Bei Anfragen nach einem be- grnlndeten Exhumierungserfolg kann man erfahrungsgemaB in den meisten Fllen verwert- bare pathomorphologische Befunde erwarten. Ein Versuch lohnt sich fast immer. In friiheren Jahrzehnten hat man Obduktionen nach Exhumierung vorwiegend aus straf- und versorgungsrechtlichen Gesichtspunkten vorgenommen. Heute, im Zeitalter fortschreitender Technisierung und zunehmenden Verkehrs, besteht der Eindruck, daB versicherungsrechtliche Probleme haufiger AnlaB zu Exhumierun- gen geben. Diskussionen fber Exhumierungen entstehen: 1. bei nachtrdglichem Verdacht eines Verbrechens, 2. bei ungenigender Aufklirung der Todesursache unmittelbar nach dem Tode, etwa nach vorausgehenden Arbeits- oder Verkehrsunfdllen und nach Ungliicks- fallen. 3. bei UngewiBheit fber die Identitat eines Toten. 1 Z.
