On behalf of the students of the University of Iowa College of Law, we
would like to thank Dean Carolyn Jones for her years of service to the
College and its students.
At the time Dean Jones took over as dean, she was replacing the longest-
serving dean in the University of Iowa College of Law's history. After Dean
Hines's lengthy tenure, the school's expectations set a high standard for the
next College of Law dean. Dean Jones's passion and dedication to students
and colleagues have proven to the law-school community her ability to meet
the complex challenges of legal education in the twenty-first century.
With DeanJones's extensive efforts recruiting and retaining exceptional
faculty, raising funds to improve the quality of legal education at the
University of Iowa, and completing the other day-to-day activities of a dean,
it is impressive that she has been such a consistent and strong advocate for
students. It is common for Dean Jones to strike up a conversation with
students sitting in the lobby or other areas of the law building between
classes. She has been a consistent supporter of student organizations and
constant presence at student-run events. The recent remodeling of the
College of Law's in-house legal clinic, which allows students to gain legal
experience while also providing legal services to individuals with minimal
resources, exemplifies her commitment to student opportunities and legal
development. Under her leadership as dean, the College also developed the
Citizen Lawyer Program, which strives to increase student involvement in the
community while also providing students with practical legal experience.
The first step in establishing this type of a positive relationship with
students is attracting bright and motivated people with the potential to
succeed in law school. Consistently competing for qualified applicants is one
of the most challenging tasks of any law school and its dean. Potential
students most often base their selection decisions on a combination of
reputation, cost, and opportunity. During Dean Jones's tenure at Iowa Law,
the school has continued to perform well in all three of these areas and
