If you browse at any time in the, reading rooms of the United
Nations Library in Geneva; j  will certainly see him - 6 -trim figure
with a lean, bionzed face. and the nose and short but carefree h&ir' of a
sebia.s He will not be browsing, for he is man who moves with the'sp~ed
of impatiense and the kafwledgo that'life is too shoa{ to accomplish all
that, he wou3likeg   Hugging books and'pamphlets and papers uinder his
left arm, hi' long fring'ers snap through 6atalog-cards, his eyes range
rapidly over wel6.p1?VVn shelves, his hand pounces'on the book.  This is

Born some sixty years ago, he is dedo'nad from'a family which
.gave many~prominent administrators to the'Old Austria;  his grhndfather
was a member of the AuQtrian Herrenhaus 'nd a famious professor ot Roman
law.   Law he ,has in the bloods  hip  duoation in Vienna and at uni-
ersitiesin.~n.sbru~k, London and Belitim shaipened and systematized
his knQwledge,   He qualified in economics as well as in lavo  Soon
after the First World War he practiced law in Viehna, thek-,moved to the
legal departent.of the Kiel Institute of World Economi'cs.  It was here
that he waswon for librarianship, for before longhe became Deputy to
the Librarian of the Institute.
In :928 he was invited to join the staff of 'the League of
Nations asaLaw Librarian.  For the next seventeen years his legal
training and especially his wide and expanding knowledge of the
literature were at the disposal of the negotiators of the League.  He
was editor of the Repertoire of Qaestions of General International Law
before the Leawue 6f Nations, 1920-1940; he wrote Sources of Informa-- on:
a Handbook on the Wbications of the League of Nations, which has
appearea in English, French German Czech and Russian editions and
remains the librarian's best friend as a guide through the forest of
League publications.
At about this time, too, he began to teach at the Geneva
Library School, and lent his energy and ability to the International
Federation of Library Associations.  From 1930 on he has also edited
the Aetes du Conseil International des Bibliothagues.  After the Second
World War, when the Library of the League was transferred to the United
Nations, Breycha-Vauthier became its Librarian.
