THE INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF LAW LIBRARIES
+
Statement of Purposes and Program
The purposes of the Association, which was organized on June 24,
1959, are set forth in Article II of the Constitution as follows:
The purposes of the Association are to promote an a co-
operative, nonprofit and fraternal basis the work of in-
dividuals, libraries, and other institutions and agencies
concerned .with the acquisition and bibliographic
processing of legal materials collected on a multi-national
basis, and to facilitate the research and other uses of
such materials on a worldwide basis.
As is perfectly evident, the Association has assumed the respons-
ibility for service in a special area which is a part of the broader field
with which the legal profession is Qoncerned, Important as the maintenance,
improvement and expansion of library service on an international basis is
to the lgal profession as a whole it is something for which no other group-
either of lawyers or librarians has assumed any sustained responsibility,
although some other groups have from time to time made specific contribu-
tions of value.
In order to give effect to the purpose above set forth the Ass6cia-
tion has identified the following specific objectives to which it may turn
its attention as it develops its program. On a number of them work is
already in progress.
1. An Information Center. One important objective is that of serv-
ing as an information center for the benefit of all interested persons.
Such information will include not only the materials collected-by the Asso-
ciation but the knowledge of wh&t individuals and institutions, wherever
located, will be likely to be helpful under given circumstances. At pres-
ent, important information, particularly when concerned with some foreign
countries, is almost impossible to secure. Item 2 below, will be an im-
portant step in the development of this service.
2. List oC Law Libraries. The preparation of a list of libraries in
all parts of the world which collect legal materials on a multi-national
basis, containing a description of the materials collected and the services
provided.
+) The Statement of Purposes and Program was considered by the Board
for a prolonged period and approved in this format.the Board'meeting.
at the Harvard Law School. [Note by the Editor].
