Mr Kenneth Howard Drake: died on November 20th 1967 from a sudden
heart attack after seemingly having recovered from an earlier attack last
summer.
His loss creates an irreparable void and it will be difficult
to resume the various activities with the vigour and success which were
such outstanding features of lir Drake.
Howard Drake was born in 1915, attended the Perse School at
Cambridge, England, from 1926-33, and the University of Cambridge
(Fitzwilliam House) from 1934-37. From 1933-38 he worked in several
departments of Cambridge University Library. He received a B.A. degree
with Honoure in 1937 and the M.A. in 1941. He became a barrister at
Middle Temple in 1950.
His professional activities, after preparation for Associate of
the Library Association, included the position of Assistant Librarian of
the Royal Empire Society, for many years one of the best law libraries in
London, from 1938-40 when he left for war service. In 1946 he was
appointed Deputy Librarian and Information Officer of the Royal Empire
Society. In December 1944, he was appointed Honorary Librarian of the
Royal African Society. Since 1947 he was Secretary and Librarian of the
Institute of Advanced Legal Studies at the University of London.
His work at the Selden Society resulted in his appointment as
Honorary Secretary from 1951-55 whereupon he became the Secretary of the
Society. Between 1950-60 he was Honorary Assitant Secretary of the
Society of Public Teachers of Law.
On the international level, his work as General Editor of the
Index to Foreign Legal Periodicals will always be remembered. He assumed
the position of General Editor in 1959 and held it to his untimely passing.
