Health Law Review > 1998

1 We at the Health Law Institute have begun what promises to be a very busy and exciting summer. The final
stages of planning for our Upcoming International Conference have now commenced, and we are pleased to report
that our fundraising efforts have been extremely successful. We look forward to what we believe will be a very
informative and productive meeting; we have already received registrations from scientists and researchers all over
the world.

2 On a more local level, we have hired several research assistants to work on our various ongoing research
projects: Lori Golberg and Mark Jackson are working on our newest SSHRC grant concerning the
commercialization of genetic research, Ricki Johnston is involved with the Family Genetics SSHRC project that
commenced in 1997, and Colin Feasby is at work on a project looking at issues of regulation in the provision of
alternative therapies. We are also pleased that Silvia Yee is back with us for the summer; she is updating our
monograph on Medical Law in Canada, published by Kluwers International. Finally, Patrik Florencio, a student at
McGill Law School, will be joining us for several weeks later this summer to assist with Conference preparation.

3 This issue of the Health Law Review contains two articles which provide novel insights into issues of causation
in tort law and the controversial dangerousness provisions found in the Criminal Code and provincial mental
health legislation. In addition, we have included the final recommendations of the Krever Commission on Canada's
Blood Supply.
