 Health Law Review > 1994

1 Earlier this year the Alberta branch of the Canadian Bar Association Health Law Section (Northern) formed a
committee to address the legal issues surrounding the current restructuring of Alberta's health-care sector. In part,
this was done to give an Alberta perspective to complement the current National Canadian Bar Association Task
Force on Health Care, which is Chaired by Richard Fraser, Q.C. This edition of the Health Law Review is devoted
to articles written by members of this Alberta Health Law Committee.

2 We are pleased to announce that the Health Law Institute is part of a research team which has recently received
a grant from the Canadian Genome Analysis and Technology Program (CGAT). The project, which is entitled
Research and Human Genetic Material: Persons, Property, Patents and Policy in Canada, will examine such
issues as the legal characterization of human genetic material, the ways in which interested parties may exert
control over human genetic material and the application of various intellectual property concepts.

3 This research project is part of the Institute's ongoing work in the area of Genetics and the Law, which began
last summer with Professor Bartha Knoppers' Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research Visiting Scientist
Award. Other research partners include the Office of Medical Bioethics at the University of Calgary, the Alberta Law
Reform Institute and the Centre de recherche en droit public (CRDP) at the University de Montreal.
