 Health Law Review > 1993

1 We appreciate the overwhelming response the Health Law Review received in its first year of publication and
welcome your letters and comments about our publication. Volume 2 has a slightly new look, although we have
retained the same features. A number of events occurred to delay publication of this first issue of Volume 2 and we
apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused our readership.

2 Volume 1 of the Review was distributed on a complimentary basis. However, due to increasing publication and
mailing costs and declining funding, we can no longer distribute it free of charge. Consequently, we have decided to
establish an Associate Membership for the Health Law Institute.

3 The annual fee of $45.00 will entitle members to receive the Health Law Review, notification of Institute
publications and activities, a reduced rate for the forthcoming annual publication - the Health Law Journal, and
reduced rates at Institute conferences or seminars. Applications for Associate Membership are included with Vol. 2,
No. 1. Inquiries regarding memberships should be directed to the Institute at (403) 492-8343.

4 We would like to express our appreciation to Professor Wilbur F. Bowker, Q.C. for the donation of his collection
of medical legal texts and materials to the Health Law Institute's library. Professor Bowker has had a keen interest
in the health law area over the years and is currently a member of the Health Law Institute's Advisory Board.

5 In addition to the research project on Professional Ethics in the Practice of Human Genetics being undertaken
by Professors Gerald Robertson and Bartha Knoppers, the Institute has become involved in several multi-
disciplinary research projects in the past months.

6 A group comprising members of various faculties and departments including Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy,
Business, Law and the Social Sciences has been formed to analyze and evaluate the teaching of Professional
Ethics within their respective disciplines. This group is currently planning a conference to be held in the summer of
1993 to which professional representatives and leading scholars from various disciplines will be invited to address
current ethical issues confronting their particular professions and the directions professional ethics scholarship is
taking. It is hoped that a proposal for interdisciplinary professional research ethics will be formulated to 1) assess
how professional ethics is currently being taught and evaluated, 2) establish areas of common concern to all
professions/disciplines, and 3) determine how ethics education can be improved. Funding for the initial stages of
this research project, in the amount of $3400, has been received from SSHRC and further funding will be sought
from the professional bodies concerned.

7 As a response to Recommendation Five of the Premier's Commission on Future Health Care for Albertans,
approval has been given for the formation of a Health Ethics Network. The mandate of this Network will be to
provide education, consultation and research related to ethical issues and decision making in health care. Funding
for this project will be provided by the provincial government. The Health Law Institute is one of the groups involved
in the consultation process for the formation of this Network. A consultation meeting is set for March 1993.
