Health Law Review > 1991

1 As of March 1, 1991 Patricia L. James was appointed Executive Director of the Health Law Institute. Patricia
obtained her B.A. from the University of Calgary, majoring in Political Science. Her LL.B. degree was completed at
the University of Alberta in 1983. She articled and practised (litigation) in Calgary until returning to the University of
Alberta to obtain her LL.M. in the area of medical law in 1989. Her appointment as Executive Director resulted from
the Health Law Institute's successful application for increased funding from the Alberta Law Foundation to expand
its role from that of a resource centre (through the health law database) to that of a centre for research and
education in the health law field.

2 The Institute will be sponsoring conferences and seminars on subjects of topical interest, such as the recent
seminar on Living Wills, held on November 2, 1991. Tentative plans are under way for our next seminar on sexual
abuse by physicians.

3 The Institute will be hosting lectures by leading experts in the fields of ethics and health law. Professor Ian
Kennedy, Executive Director of the Centre of Medical Law and Ethics, King's College, London, delivered the
inaugural O'Byrne Lecture in Law, Medicine and Ethics entitled The Legal and Moral Status of the Embryo in
September of this year. The Institute also hosted the first annual Picard Lecture in Health Law in honour of Madam
Justice Ellen Picard, founder of the Health Law Institute. Bernard M. Dickens, Professor of Law and Medicine,
University of Toronto, delivered the inaugural lecture entitled Implications of Health Care Professionals' Legal
Liability in November 1991. Both of these lectures will be published by the Institute in its Journal in the spring of
1992.

The Health Law Review

4 This issue marks the first edition of the Health Law Institute's newsletter under its new title -- the Health Law
Review. We have chosen this title to reflect our expanding coverage of ethical and legal issues of interest in the
medical legal field. The newsletter will continue to be published three times a year and we will be introducing new
features in the coming months.

5 Our theme for this issue is the subject of Advance Directives/Living Wills. We have chosen this theme because
of the tremendous public interest in this area, but we hope the articles presented will be of interest to the legal
profession and to health care professionals who are dealing with these issues on a daily basis. Your comments and
opinions are welcomed and will be published in our next issue.

6 We also encourage any interested party to submit articles for publication in forthcoming issues.

7 In addition to the newsletter and the annual Journal, the Institute will also be publishing brochures on medico-
legal issues of interest to the general public as well as legal and health care professionals.
