EDITORS' INTRODUCTION
We are pleased to serve as guest editors of this issue of HEC
Forum, which highlights the Cleveland Clinic Foundation's (CCF) Ethics
Committee as it celebrates its Tenth Anniversary. The formation of the
Committee in August 1984 occurred at the same time that George A.
Kanoti, S.T.D., accepted an invitation from the Clinic's professional staff
to establish a Department of Bioethics to provide consultation and
educational services for health care professionals, patients, and their
families. From the start, the Committee and the Department have been
proactive and collaborative in identifying and dealing with institutional and
patient ethical concerns.
During its 10 years of existence, the Committee's membership has
evolved from 8 to 14 members. The expansion increased interdisciplinary
perspectives and representation, while providing additional committed and
knowledgeable individuals to serve on the Committee's standing
subcommittees and ad hoc task forces. A total of 27 persons have served
on the Committee for various periods of time. Three of the current
members were founders of the Committee in 1984.
The developing role of the Committee in the institution and the
community is similar to that of many healthcare ethics committees (HEC)
in the United States. Over the past decade, the Committee has channeled
its energies into policy recommendations, education, and case consultation.
The Committee is rightfully proud of its accomplishments, which parallel
developments in the field of bioethics. The Committee's contribution to
institutional policies on such topics as Do-Not-Resuscitate orders, brain
death, anencephalic infants as organ donors, and forgoing life-supporting
therapies demonstrates its ability to respond to local needs and national
issues in bioethics. The Committee's publication of a patient and family
brochure (Your Guide to Managing Personal Health Care Decisions) is
symbolic of the members' continual concern that clinical ethics and bedside
decisions always give appropriate consideration to the experiences, values,
and circumstances of patients and their loved ones.
