SPECIAL ISSUE ENCOUNTERING HUMAN RIGHTS:
GENDER/SEXUALITY, ACTIVISM AND THE PROMISE
OF LAW
EDITORIAL INTRODUCTION
This special issue of Feminist Legal Studies grows out of a con-
ference on Encountering Human Rights: Gender/Sexuality, Activ-
ism and the Promise of Law, run by the A.H.R.C. Research
Centre for Law, Gender and Sexuality (Centre L.G.S.) in con-
junction with Liberty and the Legal Action Group, and held at the
University of Westminster in January 2007.1 This two-day con-
ference brought together activists, academics and practitioners to
assess how human rights law and practice in the U.K. interacts
with issues concerning gender and sexuality. Some of the central
questions that the conference asked included whether and how
litigation on gender/sexuality and human rights can be effective in
the long-term; whether the problems associated with making rights
claims are outweighed by how useful they can be; and what lessons
we can learn from other jurisdictions (for example South Africa
and Canada) about litigation and campaigning. One of the
objectives of the conference was to establish a meaningful dialogue
between activism, academia and legal practice. It combined an
analytical attitude to rights litigation with an open and collabo-
rative attempt to think creatively about how to use human rights
arguments to achieve substantive goals.
Most of the papers included in this special issue were originally
presented at the Encountering Human Rights Conference. Pragna
Patel was one of the plenary speakers, while Sari Kouvo, Clare
McGlynn, Barry O'Leary and Tania Pouwhare spoke in the panel
The conference received financial and other support from Kent Law School, the
University of Westminster, Social & Legal Studies, and in particular from the
Modern Law Review. This support is gratefully acknowledged.
